Please be mindful that in 2014-15 our school district will be fully implementing the Common Core State Standards, a rigorous set of standards designed to ensure that all students are successful participants in the world of the 21st Century. The Common Core State Standards establish clear, consistent guidelines for what every student should know and be able to do in math and English language arts from kindergarten through 12th grade.
Because of this shift in education, it is more important than ever that students be physically present in the classroom for instruction. Classroom instruction supports inquiry and discovery, reliance on multiple resources, and continuous assessment. Much of the work focuses on students applying concepts to real world situations. The learning is active and interactive. When students are absent, they miss significant learning opportunities that cannot be “covered” through packet work.
Please be mindful of this when planning trips during the school year. Time spent away from the classroom will significantly impact your student’s progress and academic achievement. That is time and experience they can ill afford to lose.
The standards were drafted by experts and teachers from across the country and are designed to ensure students are prepared for today’s entry-level careers, freshman-level college courses, and workforce training programs. The Common Core focuses on developing the critical-thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills students will need to be successful.
The new standards also provide a way for teachers to measure student progress throughout the school year and ensure that students are on the pathway to success in their academic careers.(http://www.corestandards.org/what-parents-should-know/)
As you plan vacations and trips, please refer to the district's instructional calendar. Have a wonderful summer and thank you for your continued support of the Iron Horse Middle School community.
